I don't get it

I'm trying to install a power window module in my 93 RX7. People keep telling me I need to run 12 gauge wire between the module, the switches and the motors. When I removed the door panels I found all the factory wiring is only 16 gauge. So why the hell do I need to run wires so much heavier than stock? If 16 gauge is heavy enough for Mazda, how come it's not enough for the window module? The motors are going to draw the same amount of current as they did before adding the power window module. If I had room it wouldn't be a big deal, but these four 12 gauge wires are so large when I route them where they need to go they prevent the door panel from fitting properly.
