System Setup
Posted by Brian0213 on 10-25-2004 12:14 PM:

This will be my first install in a vehicle. I use JBL products with a youth group in a rock/worship enviroment and have enjoyed there sound for years. I am building a system for my 96 Dodge Ram 1500 2dr ext. cab. Here is a list of my thoughts. Not planning on customizing too much. Pioneer DEH-P960MP Headunit JBL GTO606C front door panel JBL P550c Rear seat panel JBL GTO75.4 Amp to power speakers mount under seat build a rear and side panel to protect from water and feet. Breathe from front and side where middle seat is. MTX Thuderform unloaded for under rear seat. Mounts 2 10" subs and amp. No loss of feet room in rear. JBL GT100 2 each. 10" subs JBL GTO601.1 class D sub amp. Does this sound like a system worth installing? Will this require any alterations on my truck. My local shops do not handle these JBLs and I know the pro sound that I get from the concert equipment that they produce. What is your opinions on JBL car products? Is there anything that i am not thinking of? I know wiring from battery to amps, remote lines from HU, 2 1.0 capacitors, and RCA cabling. Thanks for the help!!

I am also wondering about the outputs from the HU. The amp GTO75.4 only accepts 5.8v input and the GTO601.1 only accepts 5.3V. The HU sends out 6.5. It sounds quite simple, it will kill the life of the amp or won't work. Is this true, or is there another option. Like I said, the JBL is from using the pro audio eq. and I know that this could be the same brand but 2 different companies. Your opinions please.

Ive never had personal experienc with JBL,but I have heard they put out exceptional sound quality.Having a higher voltage HU will only send a cleaner signal to your amps,a good thing.

Thank you for your input. Any others with JBL experience. I know it is all personal taste, but without being able to hear the speakers, I will have to go by others experience. This will be a total SQ setup not for SPL.

I have also had a lot of experience with JBL's pro audio gear, which is very good, or kinda bad, depending on what line you buy. For some time, their car audio gear was adequate but not exceptional, but more recently they've done a much better job. The amps (as long as you get the higher end ones) are very nice. Those are a good buy. I had some JBL 6x9's a couple of years ago, and they were alright, but not fantastic. Now for the same money I'd probably get Polk's or the low end JL TR series. There are a few others, but I've actually heard those two and know they can be had for under $150 which is what I paid for the JBL's. Their newer speakers may be better like the amps, but I don't know. With the subs I'd probably go a different direction. I use JL subs, which I am very fond of, but some here say their price/performance ratio isn't that great. Perhaps, but I got a pretty good deal on mine through ebay, so I can't complain.

By the way, since it doesn't appear you're interested in cheapo stuff anyway, I should mention what I actually use right now. I have JL XR525csi components in the front, Alpine Type-R 6.5's in the back, JL 12w3v2's in the trunk, and an alpine mulitchannel and an mtx mono amp powering everything. I personally am very happy with the sound, and I, like you have much more experience with pro audio than car audio. Switching the mtx mono amp with a JBL would probably be an upgrade. On the alpine, I'm not sure, I'd have to hear both.

Thanks for the reply woofersus. It sure would be helpfull to get all of the components together and listen to them in a similar setup, but being in Memphis TN there isn't much SQ sound systems. Just how hard it hits and can your neighbor feel it. I will check out the JL and Alpine.

There is definitely no substitute for hearing it. Everybody likes a slightly different sound after all. Be sure to put most of your money into the front speakers. The back is mostly for fill. Pick a decent all around speaker (like the alpines I use) that can handle whatever power and volume levels you will be throwing at them. I could probably be just as happy with a couple of other things in the back, but I got the alpines on ebay for $60. The JL's in the front, however, I wouldn't trade for anything. They were pricey but worth every penny.

If you like JBL that much, you could try Infinity components.Infinity and JBL are made by the same company.I have heard some JBL subs that really pound.Like their GT series.Anyway I remember I did have a JBL sub one time,it was a 15"JBL Signature Series(the one with the graphite magnet and the fiberglass cone)and man would I like another one of those.I believe it was a P.A. speaker am I right?I didnt even know what it was at the time and I had it hooked up all ghetto,I had it in a cardboard 55 gallon drum in a trailer, but man was that low-end great. It shook the trailer across the street.I also had 2 more Signature Series that had a regular cone, but they were 16ohm so I never hooked them up.

I'll admit I haven't heard any of JBL's recently redesigned subs, but I had one of those GT series subs from a few yrs. ago and while it was alright for the money, I can't say it is in the same league as the JL's I have now. For that matter, I've got a 12" JBL GT122d still sealed in it's original packaging that I'd sell for around $40 plus shipping. I use the other one in my home theater system. The higher end JBL PA subs absolutely rock. I have a couple of those and love them. Not sure if they're the same Signature Series you mentioned or not. Infinity makes some really nice stuff, as long as you stay away from the Reference series.

Thanks

Thanks for all of the input. I am going to check out the Infinity and the JLs. I am not a one brand kinda person so mix and match isn't a problem. The only true problem is SQ over wind and road noise. About 70-80 mils of sound deadener should fix most of that. JBL and Infinity are both owned by Harmon Ind. They are still 2 different companies owned by the same corp. By the way, does anybody know of anyone who recushions and recover seats???? I found Sonny's in IN. Kinda wanting to find something closer to home. Memphis TN area. Thanks again and GO VOTE everyone.
