Cell phone interference???? Strange speaker noises- Help!
I have a 98 Camry with an aftermarket JVC double din CD/cassette with decent Memphis speakers all around. The unit is about 8 months old with no problems until about 2-3 weeks ago.
In the right frontdoor- lower two way- I would start to hear what sounded like a separate- somewhat digital sounding- signal come through the speaker in a burst of 10-20 seconds. It sounds like a galloping morse code signal. In other words, it has a slight pattern and periodicity. It is a lower tone but seems to only be coming through that speaker. It it not a buzz or a crackle and does not get louder with the volume turned up. It also does not seem to matter if the CD/Cassette, or AM or FM is selected at the time... it has appeared during the operation of all three. [I actually thought the noise at first was my ringer on the new smallish flip phone, muffled on the seat under all the stuff I tend to have in the car darn near living in it.- So that ought to give an example of the tone-almost like the sound of a vibrating ringing cell phone-- that isn't!]
I have about 1hr to 1 1/2 hr commute into Chicagoland and would hear it 4-5 times on the trip in or home sometimes.
I took the vehicle back to the car audio installers and they could never hear it and could not reproduce it. So they put the factory radio back in and rehooked up the stock amp, in an effort to eliminate some possibilities.....
The noise STILL has occurred, although not as loud and a little less clearly! So it's not just a digital signal getting reprocessed from the unit incorrectly or a bad amp in the stereo sending errant signals to that channel/ speaker....
The only thing I can think of is that I got a new GSM LG/Cingular phone around the same time. I'm wondering if this is not RFI interference. The only explanation I have to explain what I thought was randomness before is that the phone may show activity as it switches cell towers, thus the approx. every 10 minutes it kind of occurs at. Maybe that's why the car audio place can't hear/make it happen, is that the car is stationary (and without my phone).
Am I nuts? I have done searches and not finding a lot out there other than cell phones causing buzzing in computer speakers or problems with radio controlled helicopters, etc. Nothing like this patterned signal......
Is there another plausible explanation?
Suggested fixes (shielded cables,etc?)
Thanks in advance for your help.

I have the same problem. Cingular service with an L1200. It does it through the sound system in my gf's truck (clarion HU), but not in mine (blaupunkt). Also interferes with my computer monitor and our RCA tv.
I just move the phone a foot or two away from whatever it's interfering with and it goes away.

And it's like a de-de-deee-de-deee-de-deeeeet-de.... type pattern through the speakers in the car?
I have had the phone in the passenger seat, and in the center console by the lighter and it doesn't make a difference..... Seems impractical to put it in the backseat or have to leave it off while driving......

yep, sounds like morse code on steroids.
Bummer that moving it away doesn't fix the problem for you. Gf's truck only does it loud if the phone is in the dash pocket right below the hu. If I move it back a foot or so to the console it doesn't interfere. Same with the comp monitor.
Don't know what else to tell ya. :T

Well, good to know it's not just the LG1300 that does it. The wife's Motorola V220 camera phone (also GSM) does it too in my Camry. Now to see if it does it in the Maxima on the Bose system in there.......

N2Audio/T-
What's the difference in the setup from the
Clarion to the Blaupunkt system?
As a S-SWAG (semi-scientific wild arse guess) I'm actually thinking along the lines of the antenna that the Camry has might be a possible culprit. Talking through it my the car audio supplier/installer, he can't see how the "cell phone signal" in the 800-1900MhZ range is being received and broadcast into the system and relayed through the speaker--seing how both the factory radio and the JVC both show it, but that the galloping Morse code on steroids is unaffected by the volume control......
Anyone--What explanation is there for why it would show up in one vehicle's audio system and not the other?

After extensive searches on the net:
http://www.cellphonekb.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/cingular/2500/Moto-V551-hourly-interference-with-computer-speakers
These guys are advocating shielded cables (even for a car) and line filters.....

this happens with certain decoder chips, expectually with decks that have mp3 decoding, but it really depends on what type it is, it should say in the manuel whether its affected my microwaves or not.

korndog- I guess I don't follow why I get it then on Both the JVC KWXC777 that will do the MP3's, AND the factory Toyota stereo cassette deck that does not even have a CD.....

it doesn't necessary have to be mp3 or cd, its the type of decoder it uses, a lot of the newer cassete tape players of digital decoders on them. I remember reading about how a cell phone can create enough static to set you on fire if you decide to pump gas and talk on a phone. Nothing interfers more with IC chips then static (except maybe a hammer). Static also affects monitors as well. I bet if you look into a deck that isn't affected by cell phones, it will probably be shielded. In fact, i now recall my PSone acting funny after i removed the shielding plate to put in some mods.

i think so too
theres probably sort of a shield but on the actual car, i guess since i have an mp3 deck and never had any problems. Also using just those connect to oem harnesses with the power and ground wire like 22 gauge leads to so many problems in the first place.

Yup yup...
My Moto V600 with Cingular service does the same thing when my cell phone is parked under my head unit. If I put the phone in my passenger seat, no noise. The easiest thing to do is find a new home for your cell phone away from the head unit.

Location Doesn't matter
It doesn't seem to matter whether it's on the clip on my belt, in the passenger seat, or in the tray under the head unit..... still does it! Haven't tried the backseat or the trunk (although that WOULD be somewhat impractical :> )
