 why hardly any SQ comps?

Achieving a world record in spl in my eyes is not impressive because it sounds like shit and if it sounds like shit why spend $40 grand on it. I was wondering why so few pure sound quality competitions exist (i don't mean sql). Is it because sound quality is so subjective and the expereince is endemic to the individual? Or is it simply because most spl enthusiasts have lost their hearing by the age of 25? Holler Back Chris

there are sq comps, but people just like more spl. i thought they didn't use 'ear's in a sq comp, they use an oscilloscope right?

I don't know, I've only heard of one sq comp and it had very few details. It used judges who sat in the car.

thats not very fair unless they were blindfolded, lol. the ones around here use an oscil. shows lots of detail. I personally think it should be a combination of both sq and spl, and i don't mean sql. you get points for sq and then for spl, add'em up for ur total, but its not like that, a lot of people just want dB.

what do they look for with the oscilloscope? I mean do they pop a test cd in with a 15hz-25kz linear (or logarithmic) sweep and knock points off for every time the system deviates below -3db during the sweep? That's the only thing I could think of that you would use an o-scope for.

i think so, and they detect inaudible distortion and even detect rattling/vibration.

sq comps(depending on the orginization) can have alot of judged factors (1) judges sit in the car and evaluate the staging, imaging, clarity and overall sound of the system (2)quality and saftey of the install is judged, everything from spare tire access to proper fusing pratcice3s(3) an RTA or Real Time Analyzer is used to evaluate the frequency response of the system (for this you would want the flattest response possible)(4) spl measurement(for this you would set your system for 1 loud frequency). As far as I know they dont use an oscilloscope in sound competitions. All this can add up to a score for sq.
Spl compitition is great also, there are no human factors/errors in the judging process, just you and the mic/sensor, also there are alot of factors that go into making a loud vehicle including days, weeks and months of testing. It is a great acomplishment to make a vehicle loud enough to make it to finals. I respect them both because they both take alot of hard work and dedication

 sq

If youll look at mine you can see that I can push both sq and spl, however I've never had it metered (hadnt gotten round to it yet)when I crank up, i am extremely clear all the way up to 60 on my hu (it goes to 62)even with all my amps on.I can controll all amps individually or all at once.and at carshows when they have the bass going, I can pretty much stay with the pack(there are exceptions obviously)however back in the day when I used drive in speaker transformers (little did I know what I was doing at the time)and that was before amps were even thought of to be used in catrs I was producing pretty good sound from a basic mono radio and was winning shows(allthough not many as there werent that many shows back then either.LOL. anyways,I agree with you on the contests now ppl dont really appreciate the quality of sound as what myself or others do,rather they just want the bump. I have discussions about this subject all the time especially with the real young crowd.(you know the ones)And they get very disappointed when a car like mine comes along and walks over all the money they put in thiers simply because they didnt set them up right. Hope I wasnt too rambly on this subject. thanx.
