does the gauge of the wire from your amp to sub really matter?

EXTREMELY!!! lemme tell ya something, when i got my hifonics amp, i hooked it up with 16AWG wire.... it use to clip when it got quite some power, then i bought my 4 guage wiring kit and ive increased as much as 5db and a TON of sound quality

Oh!!! your taking about the output wires... well then, it all depends on how far your running it, if your amp it 10 feet away from your sub, than you need 10AWG Wire... if its 1 foot, you could go as low as 18AWG... its all about resistance and Voltage Drop

in all seriousness - it would take either a super long run, or several thousand watts to need anything larger than 12 ga speaker wire.
