Woofer overheating?

Hello, I have a single Audiobahn AW121T woofer (550W RMS 4ohm) in a sealed box running off a Audiobahn A8000T class D (4ohm mono 400x1) I can pound (meaning keep it turned up) low bass all day long, but if a song has a higher feq. bass my woofer will start stinking (burning) and I have to turn it down. This happened in my last car with a whole different Amp/sub set up and with 2 different brand woofers. What can I do to stop this? I would like to play all songs at the same level. Who a better woofer like a ALUM12N solve the problem? Would a bigger ported box help? Thanks Chris

Maybe the gain/input sensivity on your amp is to high. It may suits some music but in others cases can sounds like ass and barely blow your sub. Audiobahn stuff tends to overheat somethimes. Since I'm a Metal listener I had to turn down my gain at 1/3 (2V) Metal music has alot of double-bass drums and every metal CD is recorded differently. The gain doesn'T drop your volume too much it's just there to be tuned to your radio Ouput. My 2 ten's sound tight and fucking loud. Loud enough to make my clothes move at 2/3 volume. If your radio has 2V rca ouputs you've got to set the amp gain knob near 2V. So when your radio will send in the amp a 2Volts current ( 2/3 volume and more, depends on brand) you'll get the optimal power for your amp without distortion, clipping or sub overheating. My HU has 4volts HO ouputs, idealy if i was able to listen to it at max volume all the time (my ears don't want to) i'd set my gain knob to 3-4 volts setting to matche my HU. But 2/3 volume at 2V is enough for me(110-120dB) so that why i've set the amp at 2 volts. It's a lot of trial and listens to find the sound that is perfect for you. I've had my D class amp for a month and half and I've just found the perfect tunning for my musical preferences. It can takes several hours, days, weeks of tunning to get the sound you want. Listen to your favorites CDs and the one that makes your sub overheating. do some test with your gain, bass boost, frequency, HU audio options. BTW overheat is never good on a sub since it do not have a protection mode like amps. You can fry the coil.

Thanks, I have a Pioneer DEH-p860mp with 6.5volt pre-outs. The gain on the woofer's amp is turned up about 1/3 (about 2.1 volts, right?). It seemed I could turn it way higher and still sound good, but the bass was louder than the rest of the system so I turned it back down to even things out. I might have to play with it some more. Just seemed odd to me, I would of thought lower bass feq. would harm the woofer. I know the coil is burning and I turn it down when it smells. The smell is probably the fluid heating up. Would a ported box let the woofer move easier and therefore keep it cooler? Would a higher rated woofer handle the same power better or would I still have to turn the amp down. I have no boost turned on, loud button is "off", EQ is set to "natural" sound, X-over boost is on "0". If I turned the amp down and used some of the boost would that put right back where I was?

Your woofer and amp specs matches well, i wont spent money buying a new one for now, Did you try to lower the frequency on the amp (like at 70hz)? How your crossover is tuned (amp/HU)? Yes a ported box cools the sub a little, but if the box is badly tuned your can kill a sub anytime. What is the internal enclosure space you've got? Maybe it don't suits your sub Specs. Is the sub bridged? I'll stay around so write me back
