 wood q"s and a's

i know from wood working a long time that all woods have differnet uses like particle board compared to medium denisty fiber board [mdf]. question are is there any acoustic difference? i have had nails strip out on the two so were the advantage of using a sheet of mdf at twice the price of particle board? also have had a lot of problems with mdf. like the out side edge of a dado track breaking which will not happen to particle board at the thickness i was useing. any ways mabe this will help people out figure out what to buy and what not to buy rhino............

i have heard that particale board is better for boxes. i think it is cause it gets more flex in the board. so it gets louder. but hey that is just what i have heard.

I use 3/4" MDF so the enclosure WILL NOT flex. A box that flex's will not be louder than one that dosent. I perfer MDF over any, mostly because it is a reasonable price, strong, and easy to work with.

funny thing is 3/4 particle board is as stiff as 7/8 mdf. [7/8 is thicker] and your right about box flex and prices go by area some times wood will be cheaper in one state compared to another [like michigan]i think the mayjor reason for buying mdf is because it is a easy board to work with , with out haveing a shop this is were jig saws come into play me i got a ten inch table saw that cost about 2000 dollars u.s. compare to 50 for a jig saw this is were i think it is easyer to work with not trying to correct ya just trying to make sure people know about particle board and mdf and the difference between them rhino.......

I use particle board for my enclosures, for rigidity, i believe TCAB does too(correct me if im wrong). But I will not deny acoustics of mdf.

Funny thing is that I just had this chat with Mike Jones and the owner of Digital Designs. MDF is better then Partical board only when it comes to high power setups with large boxes.... anything that has a span of 20+ inches on any side. Then the partical board will tend to flex easyer. MDF holds a hair better and tends to have a hair better sound but nothing major. HDF on the other hand is more lbs. then the others but give a more solid sound as well as better for even higher powererd boxes. I had to use 2 layers of 3/4 " for my last 2 15 box w/ a good amount of braces.... also was 14cubes big... this time since I upped it to 4 9515s with over 3000rms to each I was told to use Baltic Burch 13 ply... I myself never seen or heard of this wood untill I called around trying to find it. 88 bucks a sheet and 1 hour drive later I got my hands on it.... not only is it lighter to build the box out of then a double 3/4" mdf box but it is alot stronger.... almost no flex when 2 people pick up a sheet at each end. I can use less braces and have more room for airspace.... I was also told that since its so dence that the bass will sound tighter.... How true this is, I can not say.... yet..... pics of box and system to come.... still waiting on Digital Designs to get me my 4 Z1s and 4 9515s.
