 subwoofers, i'm clueless

My question: Can a subwoofer be installed in place of a regular speaker? Unless I have an amp in the head unit (i'm not sure...), i don't have an amp. The instructions show the sub wired through an amp. Can a subwoofer be installed in a loop/in circuit with another speaker and work at all? More info: Ok, I have no idea about car audio. I can wire stuff together easily. I've installed my speakers ($80 Pioneer 6"x9"s) and head unit, but thats it. Today at Walmart I found an 8" subwoofer for $20 and despite the underlying tone of crappiness, bought one anyway. Its made by "Roadmaster" whom I've never heard of. I'm going to attempt to half ass a box for it (though walmart also had a box for $20, tweeters for $20 and 6"x9"s for $20 too). Please help!!! Thanks.

I think Roadmaster is a Jensen product. Jensen subs can usually powered with very little power. Your HU should be able to power it. However dont expect it to perform like a subwoofer because it will be underpowered and you would need a low pass filter. I dont know what kind of HU you have but if its top of the line then your probably getting about 23 watts RMS x 4 channels. Thats not very much considering that your already powering a pair of 6x9s. If your sub were more a more powerfull sub then you would have problems you would probably burn out the voice coil because of underpowering. I dont think that will happen with a Roadmaster. Getting a small inexpensive amp would be a wise investment. Check on www.ebay.com or a pawn shop for a used one. This will give a bit more bass. If you were looking to use the sub and get regular speaker sounds your probably going to be disappointed in the sound, subs just arnt made for that.

 my goals

I'm looking for more bass. Not a lot, but enough to feel, because I have nothing at all now. My HU is a Kenwood, about 3-4 years old, don't know what model or number. It cost around $120 back then, so its not junk. I'm not looking for it to sound like regular speakers at all, far from it. I looked on ebay at the amps and since I'm going the cheapest route possible, one of the $25 doesn't look bad, despite overall quality. The one I was looking at I think was Legacy.

A small Legacy amp should give your sub more power than the HU. Legacy is really scraping the bottom of the barrel. You may want to save up a few more bucks and try to get a Mobile Authority, Crunch, Profile, or Boss amp. Only a few dollars more but very much worth it. However I have delt with Legacy before and they can be a reliable amp but they get very hot. If you get it make sure you put in a place where it is well ventalated. Another good site for cheap electronics is www.cardiscountstereos.com another is www.justamps.com
