How do you test speakers and amps?

Is there a way to test speakers and amps at home without taking them to an audio shop? How do you do it? Thanks..

To see if they work before i get them installed. I bought some off ebay and i'm going to have someone out of town to install my system and i want to see if they work or are any good before i make the trip.

I've been known to wire a pair of speakers in series on my home audio receiver. They sound terrible w/no enclosure, but you can at least tell they're not DOA.

For amps -- if you just want to verify they power on you can just pop your hood and hook them up to the battery (pwr/gnd/remote). But verifying they actually produce power wouldn't be quite as easy.

Thanks man, kinda late on reply, tryin to get my DSL hooked up. Been down a couple of days. I'll try that on the amps. A guy told me you could hook up a multimeter to the speakers and check continuity, i think, is that tru? If so, how would you do that?

Yeah that is true man, take a meter and put it on the continuity setting, touch the test leads together the meter should beep, then touch the test leads on the speakers terminals, and if the meter beeps, the circuit through the speaker is good,if it dosent beep then theres and break in the circuit through the speaker like a blown voice coil.

Cool, thanks.. If you never see another post from me again, say a few kind words, I may have blown myself up. I know it's highly, if not totaly, impossible for anything to go wrong with a multimeter, but you don't know my luck."WARNING"..I'M NOT AN ELECTRICIAN..

shouldn't be any humming with a 9v. The cone should just push out (or in if you hook the +/- up backwards) and slowly come back to rest as the battery runs dead.
