  Why does my ipod sound like crap when hooked up to deck?

I have a simple aux cord running from my ipod to the hu which is a cd-5444. It sound extremely awful, sounds distorted, scrambled, and cuts out from loud to really soft. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Is the signal coming from the headphone out? Where does it plug in to the HU? If it is coming from the headphone out, the volume that is set on the ipod has an effect on input gain, and also any EQ settings that the ipod have engaged will also have effect.
