How should I go about xm radio?

Just looking for some opinions quick. I'm considering getting xm sattelite radio. (worth it?) but anyway I have an alpine HU thats xm ready and im wondering if you think that getting the equipment to get that up an running would be worth it. Problem is I like the idea of the standalone receiver incase i would ever want to throw it in another car for a trip. Any comments on experience with this would be helpful. Im thinking I might get better sq by not going with the seperate reciever, but have no way of knowing because I've never had the chance to listen to an alpine unit pulling in xm itself.
