How to tune a box ??

I am looking at upgrading my system and i am wondering how do i tune my sub box. for ex. 32hz. and what does it mean to have a higher turned box like 32hz and a lower tuned box like 28hz ? whats the difference ? thanks.

Well 4hz is right and to me not worth the trouble to build a larger enclosure to port to the 4hz lower frequency. I like 32hz to 35hz personally, I don't make use of tones below 32hz anyway. Most music does not dip down that low and if it does my system Can not dig it.

You tune lower by increasing the port length, but the length, opening size, and box size are all connected, so if one changes the others often have to be modified as well.

It's because of those complexities you can't really do this without learning something about an enclosure modeling program.  Winisd Pro is free, not that complicated, and accurate.

I wouldn't expect a 4 hz difference to have much of an audible effect.

Theoretically tuning low (in the 20's) will get you a bit flatter (more consistent) response throughout the 30-60hz range.  Generally more of an SQ result.

Tuning higher will generally result in a "peaky" response around the tuning frequency which would give you an SPL oriented response.

N2A, well said!!!! and i feel like winsd-pro or whats it called is complicated, i cant get it figured out, darn it, my dumb fault though i guess. i like spl and so i shoot for the 30-35hz range, i think that 35-42hz is more spl and boomy where mid 20s hz area is more sq, but i like i guess the happy medium both boom and some sq... so i tune in the middle. also from what i have learned the larger the port area the higher the output but the band width starts to shrink, to small of a port will whistle(port noise=bad sound), it is quite a complex engineering process. i have been recommended to build port area to between 20% and 30% of total cone area of woofers and that is a good rule of thumb for good output and band range... i dont have it figured out by any means at all. hope i helped some.
