 Smoking Head Unit

I installed a Dual Head Unit a week ago and hooked it up and everything was working fine. I got a wiring harness for my ford and hooked up the factory wires to the harness then to the back of the HU.

So, I was driving down the street then out of no where I smelled something burning and then my HU was smoking. So I stopped and turned my car off and checked everything. My batteries positive wire was coming loose from where I installed my amp's power cord and apparently I didn't tighten it good enough. But I don't think that's what caused it to smoke.

All my wires were connected to the right color, I've been told it may have been my ground but I'm positive I connected all the wires with the correct color. The only thing I didn't plug into my HU was the antenna. Also, my HU was sitting in my dash because I haven't put in a HU harness or whatever it's called. So it was sitting in there freely so maybe the metal touched something in there but I'm not sure.

Now my head unit will turn on and 3/4 of the lights on the front don't even come on, half the buttons don't work, when it does decide to play music it sounds like it's a robot singing the song. Also, rarely when I move the head unit around in the dash all the lights on the HU will light up and look as if it's fixed, but then it will mess up again. I've also checked all my fuses in my car and there fine, the fuse on my power wire from the HU isn't blown either.

Like I said, the only thing unplugged was the antenna wire. Also, I have a 12 inch sub and a 1000 watt amp that was playing when it happened, could that have caused any of this?

Thanks, hopefully someone knows!

Did you use connectors or tape? Sounds like you need to rip it all out and start over from scratch using the correct connectors.Being a Ford you should hook up the antenna,it acts as a ground to the HU also, especially if it's orange.

I used tape, but I'll go home and connect them again and see what happens.

But since I had the antenna unhooked and it is orange, if that touched the metal on the back of my HU would that have caused the smoking and it messing up?

Thanks for replying.

The antenna touching the case(metal) of the radio should not hurt anything at all, because the radio itself is grounded.
