new ride, needs a head unit. and I need your help!

hey all, i am looking to get a nice head unit in my 04 GLI i just picked up. i have time to think about it, i wont be able to drive it till late next month (deployed)

its only got the stock cd player in it, and i want to get a system in that thing, havent had one in about two years, and kind of forgot whats out there.

i remember there was that pioneer 880? mp? or something that came out a few years ago that seemed really nice, but i have always been kind of loyal to alpine products. i used to have an alpine HU with 2 12" r's and an eD NINe.1  still have the 9.1 and looking now for a sub to go with it, i really only want to get 1 sub that matches up with the RMS of that amp to save a little money.  i was looking into maybe getting an L7 in a ported box or a mojo? not sure yet. anyhow. back to the head unit, i need one and just dont wanna wind up getting garbage. i want something i can control the crossovers without using an amp for the mids and tweets.

any suggestions? also, anything id get HAS to be equipped with an iPOD hookup.

yeah, i figured as much, saw another thread on here about the same subject and was contemplating a kenwood kdc bt945u. looked pretty decent.

i just remember there being a really nice pioneer that i was interested in at one point about two years back but cant remember the model of what it was. i feel like it was a pioneer 880?

X2, I've tried just about every other brand and will always stay with Pioneer now.

Check on woofersetc.com. There are other nice pioneers especially if you get into a few years back. I used to have a premier 8mp and loved it. It had 8v preouts.

at least I think the 990 series or whatever it is that they replaced it with is like 1200 on the Pioneer website.

hahaha 13,000. yeah i realized that after i posted it like. SHIT. anyhow yeah, im not sure what to do, im looking at the Alpine IDA-x305 kinda. also looking at the new 6.5 type R components and trying to figure out which amp ill have to get for them. saw that little "power pack" alpine makes but not sure if its really worth it or if it will give me the kind of power the speakers will need to not be drowned out by a sub. still trying to figure out what size speakers the back will take (dont have the car yet) waiting on it right now, im deployed so itll be there when i get back home. just trying to get a good idea of what to buy so i can do it all when i get back home in a month. probably gonna go alpine all the way around if i do this much, just for shits n gigs. those pioneers are just sooo expensive, its almost rediculous. haha

I think you could do a lot better than Alpine for the money you'll spend. As far as the h/u it's for the true audiophile. God I want one so bad just to say I have one.
