Chipping away on my new install
The last couple of weeks I have built, carpeted and installed my sub in the extended cab of my Colorado. I mounted it between the jump seats requiring me to relocate my jack. Also, I removed the storage boxes from under those jump seat and made a place for the amps.
I have had FedX and UPS deliveries of my Alpine CDA-117, Imprint along with the calibration mic along with Madisound woofers and tweeters (nice). I spoke with Don at Sound Deadener Showdown and he sent me my MLV, tiles, glue and roller. I will be deadening the doors only for now since I'm going to be in there replacing the speakers. Instead of the CCF for the deadener I will be using jute, the CCF makes me ill.
I still have quite a job ahead of me but I have amassed quite a bit of stuff to prepare myself and try to put forth my plan of attack. I am still waiting for the leather shears to cut the jute with but I have other things I could work on while waiting for the USPS to get them here.
I do have a concern though, I want to feel reasonably secure that I won't accidentally set off the air bags. The airbag control unit is hooked to the same panel I need to remove to get the HU out and I did read from the Crutchfield Master Sheets that this is a possibility. I am hopeful there will be enough length of the wire harness cable to just sit that cover on top of the dash so I don't have to unplug it. I do know that I need to unhook the negative battery terminal first. I read somewhere that I should wait at least a half an hour after unhooking the battery before I pull the panel.
Any thoughts?
Bryan

once you unhook the battery there should be no issue but some cars it is good to wait. And I want to say it is a good idea to install the sound deadener first. I put my system in and tuned it then installed the deadener(spelling? max ice is the ish!) and had to re-tune(comp set tuned to abt 80hz instead of 100hz appx.), but its ok it keeps me out of the house! Also I have the 117 but am running passives until i get more money for something louder, but i want to run active eventually, so ill keep posted and good luck I love my 117!

I will be deadening the rest of the cab eventually but I have put in quite a bit of money so far so I'll have to wait a bit. At least I am getting started and I do have the calibration unit for when I do finish the deadening. I am glad to read you love your 117.

Keep us posted with your progress Bryan. I can't be any help with the airbag issue though. Sic might have experience with it. You gotta take pics of the goodies and post them.

Larry, how and where do I post pictures? I would like to post a few pictures as I go along. Maybe I had better look around the site a little better.

they don't explain it anywhere on the site...I mean except in posts by a few people and me. You have to create an account with a pic hosting site like Photobucket or Imageshack. You upload your pics to the site and they give you codes to copy and paste for different sites. different forums use different Image coding. When you upload look for the code that begins and ends with <>....It will have that with a series of bs in between. Copy and paste that and the pic will show up here in the post.

Be absolutely sure about your airbags before you mess with anything. There is usually a forum for every model of car out there so go around and ask. A lot of 2000 and later cars have caps in line with the bags so unhooking the battery won't do any good until like 5 minutes later. Thats how it is with my pt cruiser.

Your air bags will not deploy no matter what you do. (unless you hook them directly to a power supply) Worst case scenario is your air bag light will turn on and you'll need a diagnostic comp to reset the system. As for waiting 1/2 an hour.... its a crock. Never done it never will, no ones going to pay me to sit around. Turn your lights on to drain any " residual charge ". Double check all your connections before you reconnect the battery.

Obviously you have never removed a steering wheel. And its not a crock if you know how they work lol. The airbags caps would not be on the same circuit as the headlights. That kinda defeats the purpose.

I will follow-up on picture issue later.
On the airbag I am going to do some checking, I did leave a question on a Chevrolet Colorado forum to see what comes back, and I'll try contacting the dealer and ask them.

to drain the system entirely ( static can deploy the airbag!!! ) disconnect neg then positive then holt the 2 wires together for 5 minutes... that is the accepted ASE way to do it on all cars. and it is required to guarantee that static or errant system voltage does not trigger the bag..... I have seen what happens to people that have them go off in their hands...not pretty..

Sic,
Making sure I get what you are saying, disconnect - terminal and short it to + terminal to drain for five minutes. I could just use a jumper cable and leave it on there the whole time I'm working in there. Great, that's easy! I did post a question on the 355nation (Chevrolet Colorado forum) asking them but I haven't checked for replies yet.
Thanks to all of you.
I stayed up late last night soldering my Axxcess GMOS-01 to the Alpine harness. I probably won't do any more this weekend and start fresh Monday. I need to get new speaker wires through the door, not looking forward to that.

Don't even think about telling me what I do or don't know. I'm fully certified and $5 says I've taken apart more steering columns, dash boards, door panels, air bag modules then majority of the people on here. My buddy resets blown modules for a living and knows more about car electronics then any one on here. I've seen him unplug air bags with the battery hooked up and IGN on (thats too crazy for me) LOL I even have a fully functional SRS system with a missing air bag and two rebuilt seat belts. ----------------- I'm not going to get in a pissing match, there is no point. At least every one's beliefs are on the safe side and no one should get hurt.
