 HERTZ Hi-Energy 165 XL

Just purchased High Energy HSK 165 XL for a great price. Looking for a 4-channel amp under $500 or cheaper that will make these speakers truly sing.  Of course, the lower the price, the better. I have read that you should push these with a minimum of 150 watts. I was thinking of the Alpine PDX-4.150?  Any of you like the Cadence line?  The MB Quart Q4.150 can be purchased for $167.  Maybe I should go with 2 channel and push 200 into each?  Should I stay away from Class D amps?

Thanks

at that price I would definately get the Q... that is a sweet amp.. even the guys on DIYMA love the mbq amps and they are snobby pricks about everything... I cant touch that price which leads me to think refurb?....a zxi150.4 is another option as well... both amps are active capable too.

Under $500 opens the door to some pretty good amps. A few I would consider.

Or go the old school route. there are usually some great amps for sale over at DIY in the classifieds.

Sic,

Here is the link for the MB Quart Amplifier.  They just ran out of stock.  They had them for quite some time.  Probably 5 mos or more. I kept eyeballing them.  I hope they get them back in stock.  Probably should have bought 2 and hold them.

http://www.caraudiodeals.com/mb-quart-q4150-p-4875.html

I got the HERTZ XL new for $300.  The guy I bought them from did not want them anymore and wanted to get rid of them.  He also bought them from an authorized dealer.  None of that Singapore/Malaysian garbage.  I got lucky.  They were out of my price range at full retail.

Larry,

That Zapco looks amazing.  How much better is the Zapco vs MB Quart?  May have to save money to find a new one.  Found a few online for mid $600.

The mbq can't compare to the zapco. The rainbow is an amazing amp and a zed would be in that catagory.

old MBQ would stand against the Zapco, the new while not as good are still a great amp for the $$ but not comparable still.

90% of the people out there would never hear the difference when properly installed. If you can afford the Zapco or an old-school Zed go that route and be that much farther ahead ;)

Sic & Larry,

I have changed gears. I decided I was going to spend more money to get something a little nicer. The ultimate goal was to find a "Low Distortion" amp pushing a minimum 150-200+ watts. The budget is now roughly around $700 or below.

I decided on the following:

1. Sundown SAX-200.4D
2. Rockford Fosgate T800-4ad
3. ZAPCO Reference 1000.4
4. Rainbow KW-4150 - Rainbow Kraftwerk

What do you think?  I am now leaning towards the Rainbow (bridged) or Sundown.

I would not recommend the sundown multi channel amps. Their monoblocks are amazing quality but the multi channels aren't nearly as good.

If I were to narrow it down to 4 amps they would be the Zed Draconia.

Then the Zapco,Rainbow and Sundown.

Seriously.....Give Stephen mantz a call at Zed and have a talk with him about what your goals are. He'll take the time with you and answer any question you could possibly have.

I agree with Larry and Sin the Sundown and RF would be no where in my top 10 for 700$.... a ZED would be my 1st choice then ARC rainbow zapco...I honestly think that unless you are competing or having the entire install professionally installed you will NEVER hear the dif between a Q series and a Zapco...
