 AM Radio Interferance

Have an Alpine HU in my 94 B3000 Mazda.  It's  a stick.  I'm getting lots of interferance in AM radio mode.  There is often weak signal and static and sometimes the noise varies with engine RPM.  The AM in my other car comes through amazing, so I don't think it's the stations or the area.  How do I trouble shoot this?

Do you have any amps in the system?
Class D amps can wreck AM reception.
I used to have a switch on my class D amp for that reason.
Don't have one now and miss it.

I have never heard that. What is the reason class D has an effect on the am?

I don't remember if the cause was ever determined. Maybe something to do with the switching frequency of the outputs.

I haven't seen it discussed much recently. It's possible the newer amps have solved this problem, but I have a 10 yr old sub amp that causes a lot of interference on AM. It was a fairly common topic of discussion a few years ago with a lot of different class D's. Most people, myself included, just installed a switch on the sub remote for listening to AM.
