if you have 5cuft to work with, i will recommend using one 15" subwoofer, to me an 18" just needs a little more space. if you build a ported box it will end up pretty close to taking up 5cuft after sub and port displacement are calculated in. check out ssaudio, sundown, fi, tcsound, dcsoundlab, those are the sub companies i am interested in lately, i own fi, little crude but solid to boot. depending of how much power you will be running will determine what series of woofer you go with. but going with the fewest number of subs but largest that will properly fit will be the best bang for your buck on a budget and the easiest to succeed with.

if you get a sa15" sub and get a clean continuous 800w power amplifier and build a box 3.25cuft ported to 35hz with 40sqin of port area you should be doing freaking good, hell you should be doing great!!!

tell you what mister, post the usable area you have for locating a box and what vehicle it is and ill mock up an enclosure design and post what i would do if it were me

I'd definitely recommend a transmission ported enclosure too...believe me you'll like it more than a regular prefab slot ported box. 6 cubes is a good size, I'd go with 3 12s...but 4 10s can still kick ass in a box like that...

I was looking at a quad 12 box for my explorer and you can get a nice 1200W MTX amp+4 Pioneer(92+ sensitivity) 400W RMS 12" subs all for $500 or so...plus enclosure of course. That's what I'm buying.

But I'm certainly no expert, I've just had experience with many different amps and subs...
