What is the best Car Alarm system these days?

I need an alarm for my car.. Something with keyless entry and the little button to roll down your windows is nice too :) I'm leaning in the direction of Clifford, but any other input would be appreciated. -Adam Frappy03@aol.com

it really in my oppinion doesnt matter, because most of the top brands are made by dei, wich is the best in the buisseness. clifford, viper, alpine, raptor, and many others. the important thing is that you get the features that you want. so shop around for features. i am running a barracuda on my truck and have had no problems with it, it offers many features that are found in high end alarms, like keyless entry, starter dissable, dual-stage shock sensor, etc. it also has a three button remote, a feature hard to find on cheaper alarms. but the price was under $100.00, i i have not hooked up my doors yet but that is soon comming on the agenda. hope that is of some help, good luck.

 COMPUSTAR ALARMS

Clifford is a good brand, however they have been recently bought out, I haven't seen any of their new equipement. Compustar is what I am running in my vehicle. It is two way communication with your car. If you are serious about car alarms cliffor or compustar are the way to go....compustar has the following: Arm/Disarm, Lock/Unlock, Remote Start, Trunk release, Panic, Siren Mute, Valet Mode, Passive Timing (you get out of your car and after a period of preset time 'at installation' your car locks and arms without the touch of a button), Timer Arm/Disarm (you set a time for the car to start, for example every wednesday at 3:00 you could have your car start for 30 min. then shut off), Turbo Timer, Dual Shock Sensor, and Remote Mute (so your remote doesn't beep). Add on's are also availabe, such as proximity sensors. Compustar, as stated above, the remote is about teh size of a pager. There is a picture of a car on the pager, when you start your car, the pager beeps and you see exhaust coming from the tailpipe letting you know your car is started, when someone sets off your alarm, you see the display for that, same for all functions above. There are also two auxilary buttons on the compustar. These can be used to roll your windows up and down, as you stated, or to turn your radio on/off....basically anything you want to do. The biggest adavantage to the compustar alarm is its range...1 and 1/4 mile range. I have parked on the 8th floor of a parking garage, and from the ground floor started my car....going through all that concrete is impressive. Prices will vary greatly...I can get you a compustar for $650 installed. The system itself is usually $650. Installation is usually 5-8 hours, depending on how much you want hooked up and what add ons you have. The windows are a great thing to hook up, sun roofs can also be done... however that will use up both of your auxilary buttons as one will be to roll down and the other to roll up. I have a magnadyne and I love it. I am not a fan of dei because most thiefs know that is the number one brand so they are prepared to get around them. My favorite thing to do when installing an alarm is strobes. Get you as many as you want and put them everywhere that way when the alarm is triggered the thief won't be able to steal anything because he can't see anything. 2 flash per second bright ass white light that will blind you. Also your wires under the hood put them through a couple set of steel braided hosing that way the are almost impossible to cut.

The compustar sounds great, but I don't want to pay $650.00, and I don't need most of those options. You mentioned it has a proximity alarm- could you elaborate? All I need is an alarm if the car is broken into by any means (this includes the third window in my pickup), a proximity alarm, and something to prevent it from being driven away: so three basics. Can you get it like that without the rest? And what about ONStar? Don't they do something with security? Or is that just fancy 24/hrs roadside assistance? J_Gatsby

Accele electronics has pretty good alarms. One of the head engineers from Clifford moved to Accele, and is now writing their code and designing their boards. The alarms go for about $150, and have some pretty neat features, including an expansion pack that gives the alarm a 2000' range, and 2-way FM remotes w/LCD screens (about $100). Cool stuff.  OnStar and Securty

OnStar can locate your car if you report a stolen vehicle. Also, they can remotely stop your car if it is stolen. Another thing they can do is unlock your car if you lock the keys in it. The benefits are decent.

 i have the Compustar

its an awsome alarm if u have a expensive system i would recommend it ya it may be expensive but u can keep it for awhile and u are notified when ur alarm goes off so u can kick the crap outta ppl who try to break into ur car :) haha cuz u noe when they are at ur car so ya its worth it!!

 Any thief or former thief

Knowing how easy it can be to steal a car. What do thieves use to protect their car from being stolen. I know about the bar that makes it so someone can't press the brake. However, is their an electronic system that is so integrated, that bypassing it and stealing the car is nearly impossible to do in a short amount of time. Also, any one know a good system that can notify the owner if the alarm is going off?

I forgot about the greatest alarms of all. Vehicle Security Electronics (VSE) is what all the demo vehicles for the manufacturers used to use (I haven't checked in the past 5 years or so). You can expect to spend $850-$2,200 for a VSE system, and as far as I know, there isn't a better system available.

Seeing that I started this thread over a year and a half ago, I already got an alarm. I got the top of the line Prestige alarm. I am very happy with it, I also got the DEI kit to open and close the windows by remote. Not that it makes a difference, but I like the cool little blue blinking light when it is armed. Much better than the usual red blinking light IMHO. Thanks for the input anyway guys.

 Code alarm

I have a code alarm thats great it has all the features that the compustar has ,for almost half the money, code alarm was purchased by audiovox,and they also have good 2-way alarms with remote start that are reasonable.I used to install code alarm when i worked for a company called cps distributors,kc.mo. Also proximity sensor detects movement on the outside of your vehicle,they were originally made for comvertables and pickups,and vans. hope that helped.
