1991 Cutlass Ciera, big install problems

Well, after trying to hook this thing up with my brother and brother-in-law, I ended up taking this to a guy I know who does stereo installs. It's one of those walmart Kawasaki 3 slot in dash head units. I accidently hooked up the 12v switched to the speaker wire and vice versa (2 yellows, didnt label them like a dumbass}), I couldnt get any sound except when I would "almost" turn it over, and then it would play very quietly(although on volume 40) for maybe 5 sec and power off. The guy has hooked it up the right way, but he isnt getting any sound either, he said it may be the voice coil, could have been blown by hooking the 12v to the speaker input on the radio, but says usually there is a sweet burn smell, and he doesnt smell that at all. Do you have any idea what could be going on here? Why we wouldnt be getting any sound? The speakers are hooked up correctly.

it sounds like you blew a fuse someplace?? but if you have the 12V hooked to a speaker thats still only one speaker that would have been blown so the rest of them would work.
